Contract Growers
Mills Reef's Estate and Reserve ranges of white wines come from grapes grown in specially selected vineyards in the Meeanee district of Hawkes Bay, found on the coastal fringe. The soils are typically sandy and free-draining where daily temperatures are cooler than inland areas due to the moderating influence of cooling sea breezes, ideal conditions for growing our chosen white grape varieties. These are: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Viognier. Close working relationships with five long-term contract growers mean that we are able to consistently obtain grapes in ideal condition and with excellent flavour profile for our wines. Each vineyard offers slightly different characteristics in terms of climate, soil profile and grapevine material planted. This influences the wine's flavour profile and structure and brings an exciting diversity that allows the winemakers to blend for optimal wine style. The five vineyards are:
